ночью метель and Mirror of Venus Reviewed
ночью метель – тень
Never stop counting your lucky stars is what I say! Sure, you probably heard the advice about cherishing your life because others have it worse than you. And the moment you saw that on a T-shirt, it made you laugh. But if you don’t stop to do that, all that you’ll become is a person whose life passes by and who grows angrier and angrier every day.
Who actually likes rock music? Who are the people that will go inside their bedrooms with their headphones on for hours and hours, or drive hundreds of kilometres to watch musicians tune their instruments on a stage? It’s usually the people who desperately need that kind of escape. It’s people who, frankly, would rather be on that stage themselves. Trust me, I know.
There’s a growing love for retro-sounding Eastern European post-punk music. You’ve heard most of what it has to offer, I am sure. But here’s something with a twist. ночью метель’s “тень” is tense, gloomy post-punk about, I am told, the drudgery of modern life, the constant trials and tribulations that just won’t let you get to the place where you really want to be. Still like the song, but don’t quite have those issues yourself? Count yourself lucky and start counting them stars, I say.
Mirror of Venus – Unlock The Door
Thrills are few and days are long. Work is hard, and rewards are few. So, what is it that you’re supposed to do in order to get along? Find yourself the kind of fun that takes you away from the drudgery of regular existence. For some it’s watching sports, for others it’s reading romance books. And for those who are really hopeful, there’s always pop-rock music.
If you’ve chosen the latter and find yourself on Alt77, I congratulate you, but I have to say, I am also concerned. Do you know what you’re getting yourself into? Are you sure that you want to spend hours and hours locating the kind of sounds that will help you drift away, feel lighter, become hopeful? There aren’t as many out there as you’d like to think. But let me start you off well.
I was quite stunned hearing Mirror of Venus and the single “Unlock the Door,” and pleasantly surprised to learn that this is not a 1980s recording as I had initially thought. In fact, it’s a song that blends those production values and the darkly romantic goth and post-punk influences into something that, I trust, will give you the thrills and optimism to keep on searching. Mirror of Venus do a great job here of bringing the past back to life.
