A Place To Bury Strangers – Losing Time
Do bona fide, true blue heroes ever contemplate the moment when they won’t be able to do the same things that they’ve done for so many years anymore? Do they ever lie awake, just like nearly everybody else, worrying about what tomorrow might bring?
Just the thought of it, if you’ve taken courage from the actions of your heroes, is enough to launch you headfirst into a pit of despair. But consider what a doubt-free existence would mean for the whole story. It would render it meaningless.
A Place to Bury Strangers have thrilled, shocked and stunned audiences for years now with a sound that is part dark psychedelia and part Lemmy Kilmister-inspired tactics for deafening crowds of thousands at a time.
The band’s most recent single “Losing Time” is also one of the more convincing in recent memory. And, beyond the dynamics and the band’s patented production wizardry, it’s the musicians’ willingness to stare into the void and not be paralysed by it which gives the song its charm.
Kurt Jones – Babys Falling Down
It’s likely that Bob Dylan owes his entire career to having memorised Woody Guthrie tunes and the rhyming dictionary. And, oh, what fun we’ve had hearing Dylan fix up lines together and trying to work up in our minds what it would all look like.
But, just tell a record exec nowadays about absurdist rock poetry moving records, and they’ll laugh in your face and worse. Try to sign the new Dylan, and you’ll likely have to move out of the U.S. altogether.
Somewhere along the way we’ve decided that more musical precision meant better actual music. And we were wrong. It’s no wonder some of us have taken to accepting AI music as being real.
There’s nothing real about Kurt Jones’ “Babys Falling Down,” thank God, but all those sharp twists of the imagination are entirely his own. This is a brilliant song performed with the accuracy of someone who got kicked out of their high-school band for failing to nail Ramones songs. But that’s not the point! This is wonderful, strange and determined to make you listen to it back. That’s the point!
