All Waffle Trick – Taking the Long Way

Growing up in a phase in which you invested a great amount of energy as a young person isn’t entirely absurd. If you’re not fast enough or don’t have anything good enough going, you may end up like one of the fat guys wearing leather jackets in the Summer who’ll tell anyone who will listen about the time they drove hundreds of kilometres to see Motorhead.

But if you grow too fast out of a phase, what does that say about you? It probably says that you lack commitment and loyalty and, really, you’re not someone who is to be trusted. It probably also says that you are not truly passionate about anything and that you have a pathological need to fit into a club. Finally, it says that you’d rather take the easy way whenever possible. Those are all qualities that make for a great company man, but someone respected outside of the office.

All Waffle Trick’s “Taking the Long Way” is a Summer, beaming vintage pop-punk song about the trials and tribulations of staying a punk further on down the road in the modern age. It’s also a punk song that, unlike many in the genre, has a really positive message. It’s better to say safe, keep going. And, it’s certainly better to have a goal, even if that’s hard to achieve, than to have none at all. Now, that’s more punk-rock than any of the examples that your Sid Viciouses or Johnny Thunders gave us, so, I suggest we listen.

Christmas – Always Keep Giving Up

You have to feel respect for the people who lace up every morning, go into the park and run for a couple of hours. They’re not taking part in the Olympics, and few of them ever participate in any tournaments. It’s not like running is the best exercise in the world. And, one can only wonder what they must be thinking about all of that time that they run around in circles.

But they’re self-employed soldiers, always moving forward, never prepared to give up. And, yes, there are bands who take a similar approach, but not enough. While most bands are busy scheming how to promote themselves on TikTok or how to write a catchy hit single, some groups understand that moving forward, not slowing down, is enough of an achievement.

Christmas are a punk-rock band from Germany. They’re pissed off and are running in a straight line. They’ve been doing this for a while and refuse to slow down. “Always Keep Giving Up” may not be grammatically correct, but it sounds truthful. It’s the sound of pure dissatisfaction. It’s a tune about feeling bad about the world around you yet refusing to give up. Just like those people lacing up every day, Christmas isn’t giving up and it doesn’t even matter if they’re not seeing any brighter days on the horizon. The moment is here to be won!
