There are certainly some fine moments during rock music’s long history. But, never start trusting people whose music listening habits extend only to those golden moments. Anyone that has purposely cut themselves off from the surprises that rock might be able to produce isn’t to be trusted.
The greatest thing that rock ever produced, probably, was the three-minute single. The reason why it was so great was the element of surprise. You could never know what your favourite artist had prepared for you. Or, you could never know what sort of new musical trends were around the corner.
With this in mind, take on board LAST NYTE’s Hold On as a dose of oxygen from a music genre usually stuck in the past. The emotional, slightly overproduced brand of pop-punk has the naivety of youth on its side. And, lest we forget, the greatest of records were made under the influence of precisely this.
Alternative Radio – She’s so Cheap
Genre: Punk, Garage Rock
I wonder what budgets rock groups back in the 1960s would allocate towards their tailored, matching suits? Likely more than they did for their instruments. How about the glam-rock bands of the 1970s? Or the teased haired LA groups of the 1980s? Must have cost more than most of those groups ever earned.
The point is that, besides the monetary expenses, these groups had to put a lot of work into their look and their sound. It’s the equivalent of dressing up in a suit to walk your dog. There’s just something about it that makes most people think it would just be too much work to ever have that sort of job.
I like rock that can look and sound like garbage. Frankly, it’s the best kind of music as far as I am concerned. Alternative Radio’s She’s so Cheap sounds like music that crawled out of the gutter and plummetted onto the pavement. There’s almost no finesse about it. And, that’s why Alternative Radio sound really good in our books.
