Left-turn rock: Am Samstag and Cab Ellis review

Am Samstag and Cab Ellis review

Cab Ellis – 3 Days Only

Genre: Garage Rock, Alternative Rock

Similar artists: The Social Experiment, The Strokes, Watsky, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dominic Fike, Kings of Leon

Cab Ellis takes garage-rock on a night on the town on the single 3 Days Only.

Ask an expert in any field about why others fail to reach similar great heights, and they’ll usually point to one thing. All the others complicate matters. Can this be so? Isn’t the complexity that makes it so that only a chosen few are able to access greatness. Not necessarily.

When you allow your decisions to follow a simple path, you have room to change your direction more easily. When you allow yourself to be calm, you have greater control. When your rock n’ roll is created in the same way, you have a better chance of making it highly expressive and potent.

Cab Ellis takes a stroll through Strokesville circa 2001 on 3 Days Only. This is punchy, simple garage rock. But, because the structure is so powerful and easy to comprehend, it’s one that is also easily adaptable. Cab Ellis creates a quirky, guitar-centric indie-disco jam.

Am Samstag – Miss Butch

Genre: Grunge, Alternative Rock

Am Samstag put all their stock in the potency of the power-trio dynamic on the single Miss Butch.

A lot of guitar bands played some version of garage rock in the early 1990s. Only a few became successful. Out of those, only a few were critically lauded. From that litter, only a few groups are truly remembered by the public. The ones that are liked right now won’t all be admired in the future.

Is garage-rock that hard to play? Is it the kind of area in which only the world’s smartest people are allowed to get involved and thrive? No. Part of the great appeal of garage-rock is that it takes little to learn the basics. Another part of its great charm is that although the ingredients used are pretty straightforward, things truly come together only for a few groups.

Am Samstag are from Switzerland, not Seattle. But, the three-piece treats this fact as a fun challenge, rather than a possible problem. Their sound is not only built on Sub-pop records. They not only have Jack Endino helping them out with production. Am Samstag to create a staggeringly loud grungey sound that is so direct, yet well crafted that it can’t help but get the world to listen.
