Barbie Almalbis – Desperate Hours

For the most part, and for most people, life is a game of alliances. And, like the vast majority of rules that govern modern living, pop music is not able to escape them.

It’s no coincidence that books and online courses about how to win over and influence people continue to be such bestsellers. Making the right sort of friends is the biggest guarantee anybody has of a successful career.

We may think that we dislike politicians. But little do we, ordinary folk, avoid politics. People unable to make friends are likely doomed, and those who are unable to continue being useful to old acquaintances are doomed.

When any of the great female pop-rock experimentalists hear Barbie Almalbis’ “Desperate Hours,” they’ll feel a kinship. If they’re smart, they should also seek mutually favorable alliances. These kinds of artists don’t come around every day, and when they do, rarely are they this brave. “Desperate Hours” rings out like an avant-garde soul single made for audiences of the future.

Komodo – Rat King

We demand a spectacle, and, most of all, we hate a world that will not deliver that to us. We expect disasters, not so much because we have been taught to do so, but because we think they’ll represent a shift from the norm. Many of us have so many mental scars that we are forced to hide that we secretly hope that the world will turn crazy so that we can turn along with it.

We need giant, pummeling sounds to express all of this. Music that appeals to our tribal nature needs to be integrated into these ceremonies. And these rituals need to be impressive, to appear secretive, to seem as if they’re hiding more. Rock and dance music remains two art forms that can help act as a conduit for that kind of chaos that we need so much.

Komodo’s “Rat King” mixes its time between pleasant indie-rock and chaotic sleaze. It’s music for one last great Saturnalia, a night spent in Berlin before its set to explode, morning on top of a mountain with people who have gone crazy from the dancing. Komodo know good psychedelia when they hear it and know how to utilize it to get the best over their audience.
