BIG FRIGHT – Supersonic Milk

It’s never a clever idea to rely too heavily on stereotypes. However, yes, for the most part, men are simple creatures. They’re easy to please, even easier to annoy, and will join in packs to seek out either pleasure or revenge. I mention this because I assume there’s a big poster of these nuggets of wisdom hung up in marketing agencies across the world.

It’s no wonder then that pop-rock music would be geared toward a male audience. After all, this is a simple, easy-to-understand form of entertainment, one that hopes to give you an issue with the verse and then solve it with the chorus. Unfortunately, this means that the more complex, sophisticated members of the species are reduced, quite often, to dumb caricatures. Well, BIG FRIGHT isn’t having it any longer, and you shouldn’t either.

“Supersonic Milk” is an angry song about the marginalised majority, women, and their role and portrayal within pop music. It’s also a hugely funny tune about all the cliches that record labels, movie studios and the lot of them are busy throwing at you. It’s a good time to get fed up with this stupid, old world and demand something better, and this is what BIG FRIGHT is looking to do.

The Mends – Never Said So

Elvis Costello was right! So was David Bowie. They did try to warn you that the majority of rock stars, secretly, would prefer to be dictators. Getting in front of people, hiding behind a microphone and making folks clap along to their ideas is the closest that they’ll get to being a tyrant.

And, frankly, if you’re honest with yourself, you can see the appeal. But that’s not to say that it’s right, or that you can’t grow out of the fantasy of getting people to bend to your will just because this makes you feel better about yourself. The Mends is the rare example of a rock band, seemingly, made up of mature people trying to grow and better themselves.

That doesn’t mean, however, that “Never Said So” doesn’t sound mean, angry and rocking. It’s just that, below all that red mist getting in the way, the singer’s calling for reconciliation, for a breather in the middle of a fight that will get nowhere. It’s a catchy, punchy and, yes, smart song about survival of the species.
