Cannibal Daydream – Baby, Can’t You Feel My Sickness?

You can be anyone you want to be, the moment that someone’s crazy enough to give you time on a stage. Everyone will be forced to stare at you, and, if you’re amp goes up to 11, their eardrums will have to fight off the noise that you’re making.

So, with all of that potential, why do so many bands choose to look like themselves, or worse, become as serious as their parents when hosting neighbours for a Sunday dinner? What a wasted opportunity!

Check out Cannibal Daydream! The garages of the world have moved to laptop-equipped bedrooms. But the grand, old, scary fantasies of old remain alive and well in the world of rock n’ roll, however much the general population has shrunk.

In fact, Cannibal Daydream’s “Baby, Can’t You Feel My Sickness?” sounds like horror punk recorded on a cheap computer using cheap drum machine beats, but made to sound colossal and wholly frightening. Besides, the duo does well enough to work against our general sense of malaise and deliver tall stories about themselves that are hard to believe, but easy to enjoy. Who’d wanna be themselves anyway?

Sonic Blossoms – She’s a Fatale

Careful! If you’re considering studying music with a trained professional, you are taking a much bigger risk than just spending an inordinate amount on the tuition fee. Make the wrong choice and you’re bound to ruin your career as a musician, likely, before it’s even started. Sure, they might teach you to play well and, if needed, they’ll even help you pass your exams. But is that the be-all and end-all?

Make one false move and you’re bound to start believing that Frank Zappa was a genius who made complex, interesting music. Yikes! Get a bit of confidence playing exotic scales on your instrument of choice, and you’ll end up buying Zappa records as Christmas gifts. Besides becoming intolerable, people like the ones who play in Soic Blossoms won’t ever want to be your friend. And what a missed opportunity that would be.

You can judge a musician, first, by their ability to be a good fan, and by the knack of having good taste. Sonic Blossoms’ “She’s a Fatale” is directly inspired by an ageless Velvet Underground and Nico collaboration. But where the band take the song, giving it a garage-rock makeover and a modern NYC strut, is where things get awfully interesting. If you’re stuck in a fruitless endeavour as a student, you might want to throw a Velvet Underground record in their faces.
