Chris Roach – Only the Night
Everyone’s obsessed with rock stars and with comic book vigilantes. And, of course, there’s a pretty simple reason for that. Everyone wishes that they could be like those people, as well as like those fantasy creations.
The reason why people crave this kind of life where they can get to lean into their darker impulses by night and lead a conservative life by day is that, in some manner, all of them already do that.
The only difference is that rock stars and superheroes receive awards and get their name in the papers. But, as Chris Roach knows so well, darkness has an awfully strong pull, especially when imagination plays a role.
“Only the Night” is a dramatic pop-rock ballad about secrets, unquenched passions and everything that a regular person would be willing to do in order to protect those. Here, Roach sings like a man who knows what dark fantasies can hide and what one can do for and because of them.
Sherry & Houston – Hang Your Head High
Adults are, for the most part, people who’ve accumulated a lot of wisdom in this life, but just can’t find the enthusiasm, or the strength to do much with it. That’s why they make for good chances, helpful counsellors, and occasionally, and purposefully, serve as cautionary tales.
But, most of the time, if they can close their eyes, adults can just about see themselves as kids and even feel like, if given the chance, they would, this time, do everything right. Of course, in actuality, the best that they can do is get someone to believe them and then stir them right and get them to do the things that they themselves should’ve done.
Sherry & Houston’s “Hang Your Head High” is a song about the enthusiasm and the terror of seeing a kid grow up and, while passing on advice, doing a little bit of growing up as your crusty old self. The music, however, is anything but cynical. Nah, it’s innocent and hopeful-sounding, just like the last days of childhood ought to be.
