Crawford Mack – Back From The Brink
When have you ever been sure about anything? I’ve just made coffee, and if I were made to confess truthfully under the penalty of death, I wouldn’t know if I’ve made tea instead. I say this as I am sipping the damn thing and trying to make it all make sense.
Spirituality is a thing that most humans need to connect with. Religion is one of the ways in which they do that, and often, a beautiful way. However, people who adhere to a religion also happen to be the most confident people in the world. Their beliefs are unshakable, they never feel the need to ask any questions, and they hardly ever complain. They make for great customers!
Crawford Mack has the makings of a great songwriter and has already proven that he is a brave man. “Back From The Brink” is a gorgeous meditation on the nature of uncertainty in connection to our deepest spiritual beliefs. The lyrics are stunning. The vocal delivery is heartfelt. “Back From The Brink” is a fantastic song.
Sunken Man – Say A Little Prayer For Me
Artists, and especially those who earn their living playing songs, make it a grand priority to be unapproachable. If they can afford it, they then hire bodyguards who repeat the line: “They’re not to be disturbed!” If they can’t spend that kind of cash, they just wear big, black hats and sit in the corner of the bar all by themselves.
And, sure, listen, this kind of thing works. It’s good publicity. Reject people long enough, and they’ll start to love you. There are a million books written by Greta Garbo or Axl Rose, and all are focused on their long silences rather than whatever they had to say.
But what about the artists who talk to us like we’re their equals? They’re rare, but, also, the best. Sunken Man’s earthy folk-rock of “Say a Little Prayer for Me” sounds like music made in a small kitchen and written for every person in the world. It’s polished, but unpretentious songwriting meant to reach the hearts of many. There’s no grand mystery to it! This is music about the things that all of us can understand!
