Desert Eyes  – Shallow Breath

The 1970s were filled with rock n’ roll conspiracy theories. Each was wilder than the next. Some had it that playing “Stairway to Heaven” backwards was supposed to ruin your vinyl and invoke Satan. Others had it that the ghost of Robert Johnson lived in every cover version of the blues that The Rolling Stones performed. Some even claimed that “Hotel California” was a tune about devil-worshippers.

Evil has always held a fascination with people afraid of pop music. So, let me add my own conspiracy theory, and you can go ahead and crown me with a tin foil hat. What if the pop-rock songs that everyone’s heard on the radio merely exist as a host for something darker, more powerful, more akin to a religious ceremony? And what if Desert Eyes are ushering in this new age?

Sure, there have always been bands experimenting at the fringes of rock n’ roll. However, we’ve finally arrived in an era where the music of a band like Desert Eyes feels like more than a nice jam. It feels like a prophecy of the future. “Shallow Breath” may be an experimental psych tune about common anxieties. But why wouldn’t this be the sound of the future?

There’s no reason to ask people how they truly feel about what’s going on in the world. The people answering the question will just end up as confused as you asking it. And, if you need that kind of entertainment, you can always just go on the internet.

Most of us are too busy trying to get things to make sense, anyway. Add to that the fact that the majority of really important things make us anxious and afraid. How can you imagine, then, that we can give you a good answer?

Nah, instead, you need people to stop trying to put together pieces that fit. Only then will we understand ourselves. Only then will we figure out how we really feel and, even, solve some of this world’s problems. We may need the music of sheep eyes to act as a guide.

“DSJ” is a dream in broad daylight. “DSJ” sounds like someone breaking down in the middle of the supermarket queue and starting to have visions of the past. sheep eyes make music that makes as much sense as an early morning dream, and its brand of artsy psych-rock is just as comforting! “DSJ” helps the pieces fall into place!
