Dial Drive – Forget My Name
People who work hard to become marathon runners, or those who earn a Doctorate Degree in Medieval French literature, are praised by everyone who knows them. They might even get their picture in a newspaper or on a blog.
People point at them in the streets. They show them to their crowds and advise them that they should work just as hard. Then again, few people do the same for punk bands like Dial Drive. But does it require any less work to do the things that they love?
Besides, the marathon runner and expert in French Lit largely do it for themselves. Sure, there’s a great effort involved. But unless you’re an eccentric who likes to attend 5-hour-long running events or ask questions about dead poets, you’re unlikely to be entertained or get anything from their work.
You’ll get plenty of entertainment, on the other hand, from Dial Drive’s “Forget My Name”, a spirited, humorous breakup song that sounds like it could’ve broken the drummer’s back and sent the singer to the hospital for a checkup. This is fun pop-punk music, sure. But listen to it closely, and you’ll hear devotion to the art of power chords, fast rhythms and immature humour. And, besides, this is something we can all enjoy as well. Some heroes just don’t see their pictures in the papers unless they go missing!
Talk Heavy – Die 4 U
Your romantic relationships may typically be successful or terrible failures. But that’s not the best way to judge whether your time was well utilised or not. What was the music playing in your head during the best and worst times?
If there weren’t any tunes playing, any poetry you felt inclined to write, and you didn’t even feel the urge to reach for your favourite record, I’m sorry to tell you, but you might as well have been learning how to knit sweaters. Those are not the kinds of liaisons for which Talk Heavy write songs, though.
The vast majority of songs are, in one way or another, about love. And the few of those that are any good will either make you anxious for having lost the love of your life, or will help make it easier to get over that loss.
Talk Heavy provide the cheap therapy along with excellent melodies and an impassioned performance on “Die 4 U.” You can easily spot the pop-punk influences here. And you can easily tell that this is a band looking for some fun for themselves and their fans. But really, give this a listen and you’ll find a very special song, one that distinguishes itself from music made by peers. It’s a song worth accompanying you to the edge and back from it.
