Dima Midborn and The Secrecy Reviewed

Dima Midborn – Cher Vivo

The history of the world is dominated by clubs, societies, and fraternities, all filled with people wearing the same funny hats. Histories had no room for tall poppies and no acceptance for those who didn’t conform to the rules and went out of their way to impose them on others.

We’ll soon get back to the days of having to wear the old funny hats just to fit in. But before we do, life has thrown a few curveballs. It’s a great time for weirdos, rebels and individuals. While they may not reach millions, they have the freedom to do what they will and the power to reach a small group of dedicated followers. Crucifixion may follow, but these achievements certainly ain’t nothing.

Dima Midborn isn’t part of any secret society having meetups about taking over the music world. At least, nothing of the sound of “Cher Vivo” would make us think that.

Instead, the songwriter has acquired the ability to play the bass as if tasked with auditioning for a premier funk band and has brought unique songwriting ideas to a table at which they sit alone. “Cher Vivo” is a song about false virtues, and the DYI marketing effort also includes a glorious, cheap, retro, and inventive music video. Fancy hats be damned!

The Secrecy – Theresa

You can’t rewrite the past, but you should always be ready to use the past to forge the future. If you want to get technical and even risk depressing yourself a little bit, the very best things have already been invented. There are a few topics that have not been analyzed and dissected by experts. And, in some ways, everything that’s happened was predicted.

But that could be exactly the reason why you might decide to be optimistic. If every great thing has been done, surely there’s a map that can be used to do those things one more time.

If you are an admirer, enthusiast, or fan of art it’s customary to complain about modern works not living up to the past. But don’t despair, as some talented artists will want to build their legacies with inspiration from the past.

It’s amazing that The Secrecy’s “Theresa” is a modern gothic rock. It’s amazing, frankly, because it could fool the ears of many listeners who’d swear that this was some lost classic. What The Secrecy manages to do here is construct a catchy, memorable and, yes, dark rock song using bands like The Mission or The Bolshoi as inspiration. I see no reason why goth parties across the world won’t want to “Theresa” to their playlists right away.
