The Mellons – So Much To Say
Genre: Indie Rock, Indie Pop, Alternative Rock
The Mellons echo Brian Wilson at his most spiritually inclined on their newest single, So Much To Say.
In pop music, much like in other aspects of life, most people attempt to pass without drawing too much attention to them. If they’re lucky, they earn themselves a career. If not, they, at least, make music that doesn’t offend many people.
This is all well and good. But, it hardly helps with creating a myth. And, myths are what long-lasting careers are built on. This, and songs of great quality, make future generations still want t pay notice.
Brian Wilson’s brilliant mind, and his eccentricities, have brought him plenty of modern fans. By the sound of it, The Mellons are some of them. They produce a sound reminiscent of The Beach Boys at their most ethereal. So much to say is the kind of tune that Wilson would proudly call “a sun-soaked ode to divinity“. It’s lovely.
Doctor B – Fill My Head
Genre: Indie Rock, Alternative Rock
Similar artists: Beck, Battles, Flaming Lips
Doctor B treasure alternative rock’s tradition for sonic and visual experimentation on their single Fill My Head.
It would only make sense. One of the things that distinguished artists like Beck and Flaming Lips from numerous comedy-rock bands of the 1990s, was their insistence on playing their parts with a straight face.
Not only that, but unlike many of their contemporaries, these artists seemed to possess a genuine admiration for rap, soft rock, electronica, elements that they were including among their work. Decades later and their work sounds prophetic while a lot of the music of their contemporaries sounds dated.
Doctor B apply for a similar position with their single Fill My Head. The group is wildly experimental, but not merely with dissonance, or things that mainstream audiences might find displeasing. This is a pop song as Doctor B understand it. Zany, strange, but pleasantly melodic, these may just turn out to be the sounds that will live on and inspire.
