Donïa Nö – Lingua
There are plenty of reasons to be distrustful of this world. That’s not cynicism for you. It’s something that you can easily test out by opening up a social media app, the news, or by simply standing for 15 minutes on a crowded street.
And, to be honest, rock music has long stopped being a force of revolutionary change, at least, the kind of rock music that’s still popular with the masses. A good haircut and a clean record with the police are enough to create a rock star nowadays.
Not just that, but the people who, supposedly, oppose polite society are typically the clowns who play in death metal bands and yell about slaughtering goats and worshipping the devil. Things, however, can get much darker and be much more powerful, and Donïa Nö proves.
The Italian goth star’s single “Lingua” is old-fashioned ceremonial music, a dance with all of the human-created demons. However, Donïa Nö’s strategies are modern. The beat feels lifted straight off the factory walls, and the music has the unsettling feeling that most of us feel just when moving through a busy street. The future’s as scary as looking into the past, and Donïa Nö has no choice but to work with musical spells.
Genre is death – Attractive People
You should always be wary of music scenes where the people in the audience look like they spent a considerable more time on their attire and hair than the people who actually get to go on stage and perform the much-needed musical background.
But it’s hard to resist it!
You should also be suspicious of the bands in those music scenes who take particular pleasure in praising their audience for their efforts, who baby them and tell them how much they care for them at every opportunity!
But it’s hard to resist them!
The gothic culture is having a real revival moment right now. But, make no mistake about it, this is driven primarily by fashion and a real kumbaya attitude. Genre is death want to put the unfriendly, detached cool back into this musical scene.
And the duo doesn’t much care about the consequences. “Attractive People” is just as much indebted to goth discos as it is to the beautifully unpleasant sounds of a band like Suicide. This sounds like music that you fight audiences away with. Talk about being cool by wanting to fit out! Genre is death is going to have to fight a swarm of scene kids in black eyeliner just to get into their gigs.
