It’s a hazy sort of summer, what with all the rumors, turmoil, and crazy sun blazing above us all. Here’s a perfect soundtrack to these months, some of the best dream-pop, hazy, experimental releases of June 2020.
Birthday Girl – Old House
Iggy Pop chose to feature Sweden’s Birthday Girl in his BBC show. And, as any serious rock historian will tell you, Iggy is rarely wrong about anything.
Birthday Girl’s mix of melancholy-driven shoegaze, with just a dose of garage-rock revival is will be a good indicator of where indie music was at circa 2020.
Single gets released on August 7th, 2020.
Killer Whale – Plenty Of Time
Killer Whale plays indie rock with the confidence of musicians who’ve just recently departed a Hall & Oates session and nailed it. Their demeanor and sense of style tell a similar account.
There’s great singing here done in a drawl reminiscent of Leon Russell, or Dr. John. There’s little this group has to prove to anyone and, so, the nonchalant attitude is unlikely to be merely an act.
Single gets released on July 31st, 2020
Getaway Dogs – Keep II
Getaway Dogs sound like a grunge band that started listening to a lot of Steely Dan and experimental-indie prior to hitting the studio. This is not a bad thing! In fact, it makes for a modern sound that has a built-in fanbase waiting for a new addition to their playlists.
