Dylan Rockwell – Born Ready

Bad news is the easiest to sell. I should start a website simply criticising every piece of media that I come upon if I hope to become wealthy and influential. In fact, I’m confident that if I were to turn to this dastardly plan, I wouldn’t just bring a lot of my readership over to my new project, but I would retain it. The good news is that you never run out of bad news to cover.

It’s demonstratively true, for example, that news networks make a lot more ad money during times of crises than they report on terrible things. It’s no excuse that villain politicians are featured so often. They make the cash register ring.

But don’t let yourself get too distracted by it all. Dylan Rockwell is one man who is not about to give in to hopelessness and is unwilling to spend any more energy considering the worst-case scenario. And you’d be best off listening to a man!

There’s not a lot of hopeful news in the world, and certainly not a lot being brought into music. Dylan Rockwell is happy to be an exception. The fact is that the country-tinged “Born Ready” is no silly optimistic anthem. It’s not just designed to make you happy enough to want to buy the album or concert tickets. First of all, it’s designed for Rockwell himself and to remind him to keep fighting, keep punching, move forward. It’s such a convincing self-pop talk that it’s likely that it’ll work on you just as well.

Oceans Of Mercury – PAINT IT ROSY

At first, it was just people travelling from place to place, getting a few coins in exchange for whispering a song about how the world worked, how the kings took more than they should and how the local brush salesman was having too much fun whenever he was about to deliver his product.

They’d make up words, figure out melodies on the spot and use whatever musical instrument was easiest to carry around, or replace whenever some angry passerby decided to crush it against a rock. And, when that happened, the roaming troubadour didn’t even mind.

Getting no people to listen meant that you got no supper! Things have sure changed, but Oceans Of Mercury, as well as many modern psychologists, wonder just how many more things will need to change before we forget how to interact with one another completely.

Delivered over an acoustic guitar backing like some ancient troubadour in the era of high-tech gadgets and digital friendships, Oceans Of Mercury dare to tell it to our faces on “PAINT IT ROSY.” It’s a folk song about a modern problem, that of loneliness. People buy devices to send each other friendly text messages and share all of their thoughts through the internet. But as the beautifully delivered song by Oceans Of Mercury, none of that matters until you make a real connection. Fail to do that, and you’re bound to starve sooner or later.
