El Chavito – It’s Not A Costume
It doesn’t make it hurt any less, does it? I suppose that people have had it worse. I mean, sure, throughout history, living to be 30 years old was something of an achievement. And there were always wars, poverty, and diseases that could end your run at any second.
What about freedoms? Surely, you were at least allowed to develop your personality as you saw fit during your few decades on Earth. Nah, for the most part, you were essentially someone’s slave.
And, if you’re over 50 years old and still living in places in the world that until recently were governed by violent dictatorships, or still are, you laugh when you think about the world allowing you to be yourself.
But, how’s that supposed to make anyone feel any better? One’s personal struggle is to them a Revolutionary War. And, under classic punk-rock backing and with words earnest and emotion-filled, this is just what El Chavito describes.
Sure, this is a song about a particular issue, but it could just as well be an anthem about identity. The world’s never been particularly keen to give you the time to figure out who you are. Still, this is a song that should help you remember that your priority is your own journey.
Wrockin Wrobin – We Are Wrexham FC
Should it all be over while I am writing these lines, and should any supernatural being ask me before I shuffle off, what subjects I’ve used my time to try and acquire, I’d have to be honest, that I only know things about rock music and football, and little else. If a follow-up question about whether I regret not furthering my education, and if I still have to be honest, I’d probably have to say, “Not really, sorry!”
Rock music and football operate on the same basic thrills. That, of course, is true if the two things are any good. It’s not difficult to attend a concert where the band spends most of the time on stage playing dull solos, or football games where the ball is passed around like scoring a goal would lead to the immediate destruction of everyone on the pitch. But, Wrockin Wrobin won’t stand for it. They’re here for the kicks.
Well, if it’s excitement you want, Hollywood-backed English football, destined for the heights of the Premier League, might be your best bet. Famously, Wrexham FC has climbed the football pyramid and has nearly reached the top. Their players aren’t merely sports stars, but television stars. This kind of action deserves an appropriate anthem.
The terraces are fertile ground for great melodies. The punks in Wrockin Wrobin know that you simply can’t get thousands of strangers sitting in the rain to chant the same refrain if it isn’t any good. Fortunately, this Rancid-like punk-rock boast, “We Are Wrexham FC,” has plenty of elements to remind old fans why they fell in love with football and rock music in the first place, and plenty to get brand new fans to recognise what the attraction was all about in the first place.
