Eldersister – Triple A’s
It must be a terrifying prospect to watch somebody you love make mistakes and to hope that through them they’re going to learn, make better decisions and, ultimately, build their personality. But is there any other way to help someone become a healthy, responsible individual other than watching from the sidelines?
My childhood was spent in the company of very smart kids who were made to do an incredible amount of work by their highly demanding parents. They learned math and biology, they did sports, and they volunteered whenever an extra hand was needed.
The funny thing, and I’m sure you’ll know of similar examples, is that few of those kids became doctors and lawyers, and even fewer are thanking their parents for all of that extra work. The spirit of these kinds of stories is captured in Eldersister’s “Triple A’s.”
Sure, it’s the gorgeous country-twang of the lead vocals that will first grab your attention. But, beyond the heartfelt singing, you’d do yourself a favour to listen to the words and to try and feel the warmth behind them. You may find yourself, if given the chance, allowing your loved ones to invent themselves.
Band of Muses – Ladybird
There just seems to be less time for anything important nowadays, isn’t it? Everyone’s in a hurry, and you’ve got to rush to accomplish even the most banal of tasks every day, don’t you think? Worse of all, this must all feel like a pattern that you cannot get out of and that, ultimately, will affect the very way that you interact with the world.
It wasn’t always like this. You may laugh, but there was a time, I’ve heard, when people used to spend hours upon hours listening to a single piece of music. What would they possibly do in all that time? Well, if the stories are to be believed, they would just listen carefully and invite their imaginations to play a part in the proceedings. And the musicians, knowing of this way to enjoy music, would respond by working on slow-building, sophisticated compositions.
Band of Muses is looking for a fairytale on “Ladybird,” a prog-inspired folk song that invites the fantasy world to merge with ours. This is a slow listen. This is intentionally designed this way. The music’s carefully designed, and the occasion feels solemn. It’s a tune that ought to play in the minds of people looking to find the routes in their minds that will take them to a place where they feel secure and free.
