The Pigeon Detectives – Falling To Pieces
Genre: Indie Rock, Indie Pop
“Give the people want they want!” That’s what’s being shouted by… the people. But it’s not just audiences making that plea. It’s managers, road crew and relatives. For the most part, everyone wants bands to provide their audience with some familiar singalong material meant to help raise them from their gloom.
Of course, some refuse. They record strange synthesizer music. They travelogue their spiritual experiences through music. And, worst of all, they release concept albums about their hardships. Those people get called “artists.” And their fiercest supporters pretend that they listened to their music.
The Pigeon Detectives have made a name for themselves, and they’ve used pop hooks to do it. “Falling To Pieces” announces that they’re not ready to stir the ship into troubled seas this far into their sojourn.
The verse of “Falling To Pieces” is built off a strong, steady bassline and nursery rhyme vocals The chorus resolves the tension with power chords that are over the listener like sweet summer rain. It’s not new, but it if were bad, you wouldn’t hear this format as often as you do.

Great mystery movies and novels are set in the past. Their directors and authors will get their characters to talk in strange ways and dress fancy. Fancy parties will include exotic music and strange decorum. They’ll give them the opportunity to talk about the most important technological advances of the day. Like the steamship.
The present doesn’t raise enough questions as it is. Why fit it into a mystery? It all seems so obvious, yet uncontrollable. It’s not exciting, merely terrifying. The great mystery stories are best left dealing with the past.
The Misty’s “The Never-Ending Line” is music obsessed with the past. The lush orchestration and musical sophistication of Scott Walker is an obvious starting point.
Reverb-rich guitars accompany the impenetrable, Alex Turner-inspired, lyrics. It’s a love song about romantic partners so unattainable that they’re not even alive at the same time. “The Never-Ending Line” is a cleverly orchestrated retro-love tune.
