Formoe – Dreams of Yesterday

It’s not that pop music in itself is a bad thing. It is, after all, merely an attempt to capitalize on the sounds and topics that people care most about. The fact that bugs a lot of listeners about modern pop music is that the radio can never come close to meeting all of their needs. This is because, for the most part, pop music also appeals to the most basic impulses, the most easy-to-understand feelings. The lives of typical music listeners are simply more complex than that.

If anything, this is reason enough for alternative music to continue to exist and to flourish. The music genres grouped under this umbrella term, typically, are a home for artists that don’t mind taking chances. They’re a safe haven for songs that deal with difficult subjects, or that approach typical concepts in an atypical way. In other words, this kind of music, isn’t condescending toward the audience.

Grief is part of the human condition. It’s also one of the hardest things to talk about in polite society. This makes it an even harder topic to cover through the medium of a short song. This is why Norwegian artist Formoe wants to discuss it. But “Dreams of Yesterday” isn’t just a list of opinions on the topics of grief; it is a walk through the dreams of people whose souls are covered by the loss of someone dear. Formoe blends pop motives with gothic and alt-rock ideas and ends up with a meditation on what it is to be alive and to feel empty. It’s relatable, although not quite the topic you’d expect to hear from a song in the pop charts. And this is why we continue to need songs like “Dreams of Yesterday.”

Timbeau – Jammertal

A story that hasn’t been written down by someone and stored somewhere safe and dry gets lost in about two generations. After that, it’s just a matter of speculation and hear say.

Because pop music is, relatively speaking, a new medium, one that was massively impacted by technology, we can live in the hope that great pop recordings will exist forever. There are enough people who were there at the dawn of pop music and enough space in the cloud to store all of the recordings that they can recall hearing.

That’s why it is not absurd to say that retro pop stars have reached the closest humans may get to immortality. Each time a modern pop musician discovers someone like Austria’s Falco, for example, the visionary pop star, who sadly perished in 1998, is revived.

Timbeau makes indie-rock music that has much in common with his English-speaking peers from over the water. But proximity, and a love of retro pop, also make Timbeau an expert on German-spoken pop music. As a result “Jammertal” ends up being the rare mix of the two. It’s a gentle, yet cold sounding recording, just like the synth-laden hooks of the tune. And, each time Timbeau quotes something from the history of pop music, those people’s immortality is confirmed once more.
