Fox ‘ n ‘ Cats – Devil Sent Me
People sell themselves into slavery every day. Some of them have no choice in the matter, and most of them simply don’t know any better. The latter category, for the most part, sadly, doesn’t see a reason to try any harder, dream any more than they do, to wish for things to change for the better. It’s enough to drive you to tears.
Then again, the world also includes people like the ones in Bulgarian operatic rock outfit Fox ‘ n ‘ Cats. These aren’t the kind that wait for a sublime purpose to find them. They’re the ones running toward it with arms wide open and the willingness to toil away on a dream.
We, as audiences, are lucky to be witnesses to these gorgeous leaps of faith. “Devil Sent Me” is a classily written, well-orchestrated, excellently sung prog-rock about the devil visiting the city dwellers who could make him blush in envy for the strength of their evilness. It’s a strong representation of Bulgakov’s writing and proof that mighty interesting things are going on in Bulgaria’s underground music scene.
Kosta Burgess – The Heroes, the Poets, the Drunk and the Drained
Poets? Are they still around? What massive US corporations set up plans in their budget this year for a bunch of poets and what will they actually do with their work? I ask because it’s quite obvious that the world, busy with building itself up to tear itself back down again, doesn’t seem to need poetry much.
But, then again, it doesn’t have much poetry to begin with. And, judging by the decisions of the people leading the corporations, there’s not much poetry that they can hear. Kosta Burgess, on the other hand, can. Why does he do it? Because the message is loud and clear and whispering it on the back of sweet melodies.
“The Heroes, the Poets, the Drunk and the Drained” is a classic folk-rock ballad. Does the world need this still? If it hopes to make any sense of itself, and if it wishes for reasons to keep going, yes. Burgess sings about people on the search for beauty. Some of them find it, and this blesses their life, while others just get crushed by it. Poetry is always ringing out if you wish to hear it.
