Mötherwitz – Perished by Poseidon

Genre: Psychedelic / Freak Folk, Psychedelic Rock, Alternative Rock

Similar artists: King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard, Fleet Foxes, The Stranglers

Mötherwitz sounds like the full collection of Tolkien collapsing on top of you on the single Perished by Poseidon.

Prog rock is like drugs for nerds. No real prog-heads can really take drugs and play their complex music. How could they remember all the fancy chords, key changes, and complex world-building lyricism?

They need to rely on imagination. And, usually, they end up being better off. How many prog-rockers do you see on the shows about celebrities visiting rehab? How many of them do you see begging for change?

Not the folks from Mötherwitz, I would reckon. Perished by Poseidon is highly ambitious, well-played, and sort of humorous. You don’t get many chuckles listening to King Crimson. Mötherwitz is like music that somebody introduces ahead of the Dungeon & Dragons session as “just a little thing that I wrote”.

Fruit Juice look to prove that, yes, you can teach old rock n’ roll to do new tricks.

The best thing when it comes to rock n’ roll songwriting is to assume that whatever you’re doing, you must be stealing. It’s also good to assume that you’re not doing it on purpose, but rather digging into the illustrious history of modern music.

Once you’ve established that, the next best thing to do is disguise your music so that as few people as possible call you out on your deed. Don’t worry! Most people will be understanding with how much can be done with 12 notes and a large songbook.

Fruit Juice dig into their glam rock record collection and come away with melodies sweeter than Marc Bolan’s morning cereal. But, there are strategies and surprising routes one can take to erase the classic rock feel and substitute it for something modern, and innovative. Fruit Juice have found those strategies somehow, but they’re keeping quiet about how others may acquire the art.
