Fukushima Dolphin – Fish Song
Wrestling with life’s big questions? Don’t bother! You’ll only end up confused, with a big headache and the feeling that you’re not very smart on account of not being able to find many answers. What’s more, as you go on asking, you’ll find yourself coming to the same old answers, ones that didn’t work the first time and ones that won’t ever work.
What to do instead? Simply give up, accept reality for what it is and make the least amount of effort to try and alter it? Exactly! Does it work? Well, it worked for the Buddha, and if you remember his big belly and coy, little smile, the reward he got for changing his perspective was illumination itself. And what if you can’t let go? Fukushima Dolphin will help.
“Fish Song” sounds like a tune that was, initially, designed to be a manifesto on how life is awful and should be treated appropriately, but, along the way, eventually, ended up becoming a beautifully ridiculous anthem about acceptance, hope and, maybe, even faith. It’s all about flowing like those fish, and it’s all about soaking in those great melodies. “Fish Song” feels like an early MGMT type of song that the world was missing when it tried to relax and couldn’t.

You have to feel sorry for people whose job it is to get things to make sense at all costs, especially at a time like this. Mathematics, for example, may give definitive answers. But is that what we really need the most? Is knowing the precise answer, the exact coordinates, the specific solution to a problem really making our modern life better?
Call me a doubter. And, in fact, do me a favour, and assemble all of the other doubters, all of the people who aren’t convinced that reality is what it is supposed to be. I, for one, would rather entrust my faith in their pursuits. We’re likely to get much further paying attention to the dreamers, and hearing the songs of artists like Normandie’s mnot who dare dream up a new world.
A whole new world? You listen to “on and on” and tell if there’s not enough original, creative material there to satisfy the requirements for a whole parallel universe. And how does one access it? Why, you just need to pay close attention to those dreamy melodies, the soothing production, and the hypnotising vocals, and you’re there.
