Genuine Mustard – Death Tries to Be My Friend

It’s certainly not nice to insult former heroes, and it’s unhealthy to keep resentments against people you used to love. In fact, the best course of action is to prepare yourself for the future. Lower your expectations, expect the worst, and move on with your life.

The sad fact is that people will disappoint you, mostly, because they’re designed to grow tired, old, and distrustful of the world. Worst of all, people lose their humour in the face of calamity and their hope for better days. Those, it seems, are qualities best exhibited by the young.

So, the next time you hear someone make fun of their misery, or take on life’s biggest problems with a smile and shaky knees, get out there, support them, give them a pat over the back and tell them that it’ll be alright.

Genuine Mustard’s “Death Tries to Be My Friend” is a kind of poppy folk-punk ditty that disguises fear underneath humour and a genuine interest in seeing how things work themselves out. Sure, it’s a sound that is partly inspired by Neutral Milk Hotel, but the best artists choose the best places from which to borrow. This is a song about smiling in the face of trouble.

brian – So Dumb

I’ve recently been told by a friend knowledgeable about pop culture and adult films that there is an online rumour that anything one could care to name can and has been used, at least once, in a porn film. Who knew this industry kept so busy?

I replied that similarly, there have to be dozens of good pop songs about any sort of problem you might encounter. No, they won’t answer the issue for you. But, surely, they’ll work to make you feel better.

I find myself stuck, however, when searching for an appropriate tune to describe the disappointment of a number of poor decisions recently made by me. It’s a good thing that brian was there for me.

“So Dumb” is the anthem for people who get it wrong, cry about it, and get it wrong all over again. brian is so confident in this one, and well, he should be, that the song is delivered in one quick, lo-fi haze. It’s direct, tells it straight and leaves you wondering what else can go wrong.
