Sydney outfit Goons produce a well-rounded, melodically plentiful tune on “Bella” their recent single. The mix of alt-rock guitars and 60s soul vocals reminds me of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ efforts to move away from funk circa the early 2000s.
Musically, the group should get props for delivering smooth, sound performances on each one of the few instruments fleshing out the tune. The rhythm section keeps things well in the pocket. The guitars are tasteful and often sound memorable. The vocals are elastic and confident. The lyrics praise the feminine spirit through a eulogy of one of the band’s muses.
“Bella” is a strong alternative-rock track that could snug in nicely on a playlist of similarly refined offbeat rockers dating back to the 2000s.
