There’s a purity in Harpers’ vision that you learn from the very first seconds of By and by. It makes perfect sense that it’d sound this clear. The harmonies are clearly inspired by the Beach Boys arrangements written by Brian Wilson, one of rock’s purest sounds.
But, Harpers has studied rock from all eras. The vocals resemble the Gaslight Anthem or Wilco. The choruses plunge like a gentle wave. The lyrics answer some of American pop’s most credible topics.
I tried to nitpick at the track, but couldn’t come up with much. I’m not one to just heap praise, but Harpers deserves just that for this song.
