Headways – Pressure

I hope rock music is around forever and as popular as it was in its glory days. But there ain’t guarantees of that happening. If you just look back at the past and at all of the music genres that were once enormously popular, the odds don’t look too good. When those styles of music were played in every barroom, concert hall or living room, nobody thought they’d lose their shine.

Where do they play them now? In period pieces. They play them in movies about times that are long past. They play the music to create a connection with those days and to help modern audiences step back into that world.

When will they be playing rock music if that’s what’s bound to happen to it? Probably whenever they’ll a soundtrack to rebellion, freedom-seeking and desire for personal growth. That’s good enough.

They’ll play something like Headways’ “Pressure” forever, then. This is an excellent melodic punk song that, as the title suggests, sounds made under heavy strain. But it’s also the soundtrack to breaking free from those chains, or, at least, making a desperate attempt to do so. The chorus is intoxicating; excellent work. Whatever happens to rock music, there’ll be a need for this song.

ALICE ANIMAL – Animal

You can tell a bad boxer who somehow got roped into a prize and who’s about to get knocked out in the second round by how much they talk before the fight. If the public is interested, if the press is there, the boxer will take a lot of time talking up his skills, rapping about how they’re going to destroy their opponent, and telling the world that they’re the greatest. Then they hit the floor. It’s certainly not the crash heard around the world.

Real prize fighters don’t say much, don’t move much, and don’t do anything that tells the opponent that they lack confidence. Contrary to what you may have heard from courses on confidence and YouTube videos, the people who really have it don’t need to say much. It’s the same for rock stars. The ones bragging about the records they’ve sold, the fans they have, or the songs that they’ll write don’t trust themselves.

ALICE ANIMAL is as cool as a world-class surgeon. On the assertive, declarative “ANIMAL”, the punk-rock ringmaster creates a mighty, glorious sonic chaos and then sits in it. This is the equivalent of a surfer sitting perfectly still on a killer wave, driving their heartbeat down to a cool 35. That’s why the yelling in the chorus is all the more contrasting. Boxing, just like making rock music is all about confidence. Few people really have it. All the rest have to talk about it.
