Jaws The Shark – Destroy the World (feat. Dinosaur Pile-Up)
Genre: Alternative Rock
The alternative rock that finally made its way onto the charts was very loud and very easy on the ears. Even Kurt Cobain admitted as much when he called Nirvana an unholy union between the Bay City Rollers and Black Sabbath. There was an apologetic tone in his words at the time.
The years have passed, and alt-rockers see no reason any more to atone for wanting to be successful. After all, there’s still something tremendous about being able to gain the notice of your peers just by finding the right melodies, the right chords, and the right attitude for your three-minute songs. Indeed, it’s worth taking a gamble on these odds.
Jaws The Shark’s Destroy the World is a fun alt-rock tune complete with booming choruses and a fuzzed-out guitar sound. The dynamics are nothing new, however. They bring to mind the grunge groups of the 90s. And, so, it’s only fitting that Matt Bigland, Dinosaur Pile-Up’s singer and one of the hardest working men in modern alt-rock, would make an appearance on the tune. If rock’s supposed to give you a quick, powerful thrill, then this tune certainly achieves this.
Holly – Day I die
Genre: Garage-rock, Pop-punk
Rock music has always told the truth, sharing both the dreams and nightmares of each new generation that has embraced it. It’s been both a refuge for dreamers and for would-be serial killers. It’s no wonder why it has often been embraced by cults and their leaders. And, it’s always teased sex and death, the ultimate orgasmic experiences within its lyrics.
Why wouldn’t rock reflect the world’s current obsession? There’s no teasing or beating around the bush bow. The modern Western world, the U.S.A. in particular, is behaving like a death cult. Why not talk about it? But, to address the issue properly, we need someone brave enough and able to grasp the complexities of these issues.
Holly’s Day I Die is a song that takes all of society’s obsession with lust and violence upon itself like an artist looking to offer themselves as a sacrifice. These kinds of ideas require the right kind of musical backing, and there’s nothing sexier or more menacing than a garage-rock sound to get the idea across. Holly is a true American pop star.
