Jake the Dog – BackBurner
Psychologists just go ahead and play with your mind if they really want to. It’s no wonder that many of them eventually decide to quit the daily grind and start their own cults. They simply know which buttons to push and what power this yields.
Many of their best techniques are also used by gym teachers and mega-successful life coaches. It’s all about getting yourself to focus on a time when you felt comfortable with yourself, confident, and strong.
All of these people know how to control their fellow man if they want to. But there’s something cheaper and less likely to get you to sell away everything you own. It’s the kind of rock n’ roll that bands like Jake the Dog work with.
“BackBurner” is an entirely absurd and marvellously entertaining garage-rock number that sounds like it was spontaneously constructed and recorded inside a barn somewhere. It’s the kind of sound that tells your brain to tell your feet that you’ve got to get going and better start doing it fast.
Used to Be Young – Rules
At the end of the day, it was never meant to be about any finesse or music theory. Nobody knew there’d be university classes on the thing, or that Rick Beato would be selling online courses.
It was all about being dumb enough to enjoy the moment. It was about embracing the illusion that everything could stay just the way it was forever, that nothing could harm you once you were in lock with the perfect guitar riff.
Used to Be Young love rock n’ roll! And the Norwegian band loves it enough not to show it any of the phony respect that most of its contemporaries. Playing to click track and singing in tune is for losers with too much time on their hands.
“Rules” sounds like it’s made by people with no time, like spirits that are going to fade into oblivion once the morning comes. It’s jittery, fun, life-affirming, and there’s barely one right note played in the whole thing. It’s enough to bring a tear to your and Keith Richard’s eyes.
