The Secret Beach – IYDLMLMG
Genre: Folk rock, Americana, Alt-Country
Can anyone watch more than one interview of an old, famous rockstar? Unless you’ve dedicated your life to their work, you’ll notice that they tend to repeat their stories.
It’s a version of playing your greatest hits, I suppose. It’s not very entertaining, however, or very dignified. Worse than anything, it’s enough to make the dream of one day hanging out with your favorite rock star something of a dying illusion.
Most of the people who are really smart about making music will love to remind you. Many of them need to remind you! It makes it very hard to cheer them on when they are indeed successful.
Few great songwriters have the grace to try and hide some of their gifts. The Secret Beach’s IYDLMLMG is one of those rare examples. It’s strange to see someone with such incredible command over the classic folk-country format being so restrained. It’s almost strange!
You’re unlikely o hear this guy bragging. And, so, we’ll need to do it for him. It’s really good!
Jesse Harding – Liam & Lucy
Genre: Indie Folk, Folk rock, Folk
People are becoming obsessed with where they get their food. They say that they have different reasons for this. They want to be healthier. Or, they want to support fair trade.
These people usually put a lot of effort into making these changes in their lives. Not only that, but they do their best to convince others to do the same. They talk about how the world could be improved by these small changes.
Most people listen to modern music. Few care about where their songs are coming from, though. Few of them put the same effort into convincing their peers to get their music from honest, earnest sources.
Jesse Harding’s Liam & Lucy sounds like a tune that has arrived directly from the tips of the fingers, the tongue, and the imagination of a talented songwriter. It’s storytelling. It’s the crafting of beautiful melodies. And, if we support getting our music from these kinds of sources, I’m telling you, we might all be better off.
