There’s plenty of joyous country-rock being created these days. If that’s your fancy, John Dennis may not be the man for you. “Fools Golden Boy” echoes large like murder confessions, or someone singing their blues just right as they are about to do something foolish.
Note Dennis’ confident singing and word play. The backing vocals add to the atmosphere of grief, while the weighty bass sound and string scratches pour on the tension. Even the drummer sounds at times too consumed by anger to play every single bar of the song.
There’s no happy ending to this one, just the soulful voice of a man that looks determined to travel way beyond a few pleasant singles.
