Jonny Corralitos – Over Before It’s Begun
Hippies, typically, are good people whose music cannot be trusted. Sure, everything that they do wills the Universe towards wonderful things. Yes, hippie music is filled with all sorts of positive vibes. But, for the most part, the songs are too long and aimless.
But, oh, what hippies could achieve if they could only focus for a moment? What great things they’d be able to do if they replaced their chemical refreshments with Green Tea and apples. Maybe they could be responsible for something charming and touching as Jonny Corralitos’ tunes.
Each new generation discovers the hippies, and many strive to imitate them. Their desires are the same as those of every forward-thinking young person. They wanted peace, understanding, and a place where they could truly be free. If only those ideas weren’t soundtracked by 30-minute-long jams dedicated to the Sun.
Jonny Corralitos is a hippie, but one with a head firmly planted on shoulders and, most importantly, with a love of ‘90s alt-rock singles bands, like Pavement or Weezer. “Over Before It’s Begun,” a song about wasting potential away and having fun instead, is an acoustic-rock tune with pleasing melodies and warm backing vocals. It’s quick, friendly and to-the-point. This is the sort of hippie thinking that leads to running a big tech company or writing a #1 single.
Nicolai Dunger – Rooto The Fruit
People still tend to get mad when a musical artist tries to escape from the music genre that made them famous. Old fans feel jilted. And fans of the newly sampled music genre feel like somebody has attempted to jump on their bandwagon without prior authorisation.
But is there one person who can own a music genre? Can it belong to a city, a region, or even a country? It might be romantic to think that it can. But history tells us something different. It’s the way that sounds and inspiration flow freely that keeps Nicolai Dunger’s own efforts ticking.
Just remember where most of the sounds, grooves and ideas that we use for pop music come from. There are hardly any North and South American musical styles that do not owe a debt to African or European influences. And there’s hardly any place in this world where terrific new music, inspired by the Americas, has not occurred.
Do not marvel at the fact that Nicolai Dunger and his crew of Gotland, Sweden musicians have created “Rooto The Fruit,” a tune inspired musically by Brazilian pop music and by a quote from the drummer of U.S.A. hip-hop group, The Roots. Nobody can own these songs or lock them up away. They’re available to all of those who will promise to live through, dream their dreams using them, and be part of the never-ending musical journey.
