Kodaclips – Fall Apart
Always be suspicious of music where the people playing it seem to be enjoying themselves more than the people hearing it. Always be suspicious of musicians who can’t stop talking about their gear, the hours they’ve spent acquiring technique, or their classical influences. These are people who could have put their energy into doing anything, and they chose to show off.
On the other hand, I recommend that you always keep a room in your heart for those who make music that can serve a purpose. The people who write and record music that can be used as a background for your life and for your fantasies are the ones who are truly contributing. It’s with this selflessness that all great things begin when it comes to all forms of modern music.
Kodaclips’ “Fall Apart” is a study of post-punk minimalism. The music may or may not contain a treasure trove of emotion. But deciding will be up to you. That’s simply because Kodaclips are smart enough about this music genre to know that you leave information out and don’t paint across the canvas. The listener is invited to project their own feelings onto the song. They’ll have plenty to work with, though, as Kodaclips create a really convincing, vintage-sounding post-punk track.
Uno Gold – Why Do You Feel Low
Shouting may get you everywhere, in life as in rock music. In fact, when analyzing the history of popular music, the first few decades or so suffer from a lack of shouting. That takes some readjusting, as does the fact that the people writing songs all seem to be wearing flowers in their hair and singing about love and peace.
The mood in the world is pretty sour nowadays. Rock music is either consigned to give a voice to that collective despair, or it’s a place for biker gangs to reminisce about the good ol’ days. But why does such pessimism cover most creative exercises nowadays and colour regular people’s opinions about the world? Surely, humanity has evolved tremendously in the past couple of centuries, and that ain’t much time if you really think about it.
Uno Gold’s “Why Do You Feel Low” is a shouty rock song reminiscent of early Modest Mouse. And I’d suggest that it would make for a good unofficial anthem for the 2020s. It’s an era where in which most people have never had it so good yet have never felt worse off. It’s the disease of the time, and it needs to be explored by brave artists. That’s what Uno Gold do here, and they get up to a bit of shouting, too.
