Kurran Karbal – Maybe In Another Life
All that I expect from pop music is for it to be irresistible. Nothing less and, certainly nothing more. And you should set your own standards at a similar level. After all, what does pop music promise but moments where troubles and anxieties simply melt away?
Pop music ought to be light, even superficial, but it should never be fake, nor gross, or stupid. This is what most mass-produced pop groups and artists get wrong nowadays. It’s why their music is rarely listened to by anyone years after initially being released.
Nah, pop music ought to be just like a beautiful, well-travelled, otherwise unapproachable model who decides to spend their entire evening listening to your stories and laughing at your jokes. It should make everything feel light and fun.
Kurran Karbal is a master of light and beautiful pop music. “Maybe In Another Life” is another proof of this. Reading the title alone may worry you of being in line for a tune of woe, but that’s simply not the case. The music is inspired a good deal by colourful 60s pop. The groove makes the song move like a train slowly chugging along in order to make sure that passengers get a good look at all the sites. And Kurran Karbal proves to be one of the pop stars fated to try and bring eternal Summer to the minds of listeners. Why ask for more?
Kid Tigrrr – Therapy
Rockstars are trying to lie to us, bamboozle and confuse us. They’re not who they say they are. They are playing a part which, just like the actor in a theatre troupe, they’ll leave behind once the curtain is down.
Most assume this because of all the movies, books and articles surrounding rockstars’ lives we have been made to see. That’d be fine, but perhaps the whole rockstar business made us assume that there’d be more.
The unwritten contract involved clear responsibilities for both parties. We, the audience, would give our attention and our pocket money to the rock stars. They, in turn, would be fascinating humans who would always be honest and through whose stories we’d be able to deal with the issues in our own lives.
Kid Tigrrr may just be one of the last pop songwriters who was willing and capable of delivering honesty in a powerful way. “Therapy” is a song about coming to terms with one’s issues and looking to solve them, finally. It is sung in a gentle, soothing, earnest tone. And, best of all, it saves up some space on the couch for yourself. Nobody needs to go through this alone. And, by doing this, Kid Tigrrr is more interesting than most rockstars.
