KZZZM – Can’t Hide The Truth
What am I really doing here? I’m sitting here writing about three-chord-playing rock bands and trying to make them out to look as if they’re as important to the world as the authors of the Greek tragedies. But who really cares about that?
And, who has ever really cared about music genres and trends, other than poor music listeners who lack imagination? Nah, pop music has always been about excitement, about delivering something fresh, or so old that it’s been freshened up by time.
That’s ‘cause when pop music can do all of those things, it can make us smile and laugh. And when we can do that, we can properly look at what’s really wrong with the world around us and start pointing fingers. KZZZM is, beyond anything, fun and exciting.
But KZZZM doesn’t adhere to a genre, even though it favours ‘80s Beastie Boys rap. KZZZM isn’t over-produced like most modern records, but gets its message across. And, “Can’t Hide The Truth” sounds clever and fun all the way, even though it points toward an inevitability – the people are seeing through their leaders’ lies, and they’re coming up the hill to ask hard questions!
PICKLE JUICE – Halfway
Scientific reports complain about the fact that modern man doesn’t engage physically with his environment any more. But that’s not exactly true. In fact, you see them every single morning when you’re forced to take your dog out for a walk.
They get up at the crack of dawn, put on their sneakers and find themselves some hill that they can run on, or some mountain that they can climb. They manically tear at protein bar wrappers, and they recite poetry in German while doing it.
Yes, people are busy making themselves look busy and fanatical about self-improvement. You want to shout “Liar!” and not merely because you’re jealous. As alt-rock daredevils PICKLE JUICE know, it’s all a bit of a facade.
PICKLE JUICE, in fact bring the same power-chords-meet-sowboard energy of ‘90s bands like Guano Apes to the mix. However, the band considers that there’s something deeper at the base of every climb. “Halfway” is as energy-filled as the sports the band describes, but it’s also a song about what happens at night, once the skis and winter jackets come off.
