Luna Keller – Temporary Disarray
It’s only natural to fall in love with 2-3 songs by a certain musical artist when you’re a kid. Sure, more experienced fans will look at you with suspicion as you only spin those 2-3 songs that mean so much to you. But don’t let that get you down. The truth is that most people, even those who call themselves fans, like to pick on people who are experiencing more joy than they are.
Besides, you’re allowed to slowly find out the body of a work of an artist just as that artist is free to slowly develop it. And, once you do come upon a more detailed view of that work, you’re likely to find things that you don’t like, or that mean nothing to you. But that’s simply the way things work when creative people slowly develop themselves along with their work.
Luna Keller is a young, talented, ambitious artist. But, as “Temporary Disarray” proudly proclaims, she’s not the finished article, and she’s damn well proud of it. Between charming, glitzy and folkie lines, Keller is happy to tell you about her uncertainty and her hopes. If she were done with her growth, how uninteresting would this all be? Instead, the German songwriter and singer is ready for the highs, the lows and everything else in between. You’ll fall in love with this, but just wait to hear what’s around the corner.
Are We Hunting – Patty for the Thousandth Time
There are a lot of reasons not to get too excited about commercial pop music at this present time. But one of the main ones, I think, is the fact that the people whose toothy grins are on the artwork generally have little or nothing in connection with the actual songs that have been written for them.
“But, have you seen them dance? They do moves that nobody can.” That’s fine and good, but so do circus performers impress in this regard. “But have you heard them hit an F#6 in full chest voice? Only trained singers do that.” Yes, and the karaoke bars are full of them.
What about songs that mean enough for the writers to want to share them with the world? Those are the ones worth finding yourself in, I think. Are We Hunting has one of those, and you’re likely to feel what “Patty for the Thousandth Time” is about without having to strain too hard to hear the lyrics. This is a fantastic folk-rock song not just because the melodies and the instrumental parts all fall where they should, but, especially, because it traps one of those maddening, wholly human feelings inside of it in a way that it couldn’t if the song didn’t mean everything to the person who wrote it.
