BY MY SIDE – Face The Sun
Genre: Punk
Similar artists: Turnstile, Hot Water Music, Hatebreed
Having so much angry music at our disposal is both a blessing and a curse. For many of us, such sounds are needed to simply get through the day. It’s a confirmation that other people’s thoughts are as loud as ours.
But, with the flavor of angry rock so firmly established, there’s also a lot of garbage around. Most hard and heavy bands might deliver emotional music. However, it’s usually also predictable, formulaic music.
There’s hope. By My Side belong to a tiny minority of angry punk bands with songwriting credentials. Face the sun doesn’t only ring out like a boxer’s ringwalk tune. By My Side have created a pummelling tune with a purposeful hook and compelling words to go along with it.
Madam Mayor – Don’t Care (About Haters)
Genre: Pop Punk, Grunge, Garage Rock
Similar artists: Sex Pistols, Lou Reed, King Princess
One of the things often forgotten about the original punk bands is that they wrote about contemporary topics. And, for the most part, that’s all they wrote about. Vague fantesies of freedom were not their cup of tea.
The Sex Pistols really hated the monarchy and though they’d spoil the Queen’s jubilee. Dee Dee Ramone wrote about scoring drugs on the streets of New York. Modern punk has reverted back to ambiguous feelings. It doesnt point towards any enemies.
Therefore, Madam Mayor proposes a remedy on Don’t Care (About Haters).
The artist focuses on the biggest enemy for achieving most of our dreams, the tiny voices expressing doubt. Madam Mayor lets it all hang out soundwise and otherwise judging by the artwork. This is nasty punk-rock for nasty times.
