Most people don’t have a sense of humour and are painfully aware of their shortcomings. Some, like Frank Zappa, are oblivious to them and are willing to bombard anyone who will listen with tired, unfunny jokes. But why would comedy be so important anyhow unless your desire is to make a career as a stand-up?

Well, for one thing, it helps the one cracking jokes get over the kinds of pains and struggles that would bury most people. Not only that. It also tends to give a massive boost to those around them that can find solace in those jokes and somehow be confused that, really, not everything is as bad as it first appears.

Gregory Ackerman’s “OK to LA” is a beautifully crafted piece of modern indie folk that presents itself like a soundtrack to a comedy. It has several things that make it stand out from its numerous folkie counterparts trying desperately to score a commercial for a hybrid car.

The lyrics are heartbreaking and funny, the backing vocals give this an otherworldly sound and the writing, albeit light, seems to suggest that Ackerman is on a desperate journey toward the finish line. And, of course, everyone wants to know how these kinds of stories turn out.

I am traveling through Europe at the moment, and judging by the importance it is being given, you’d think that the Eurovision Song Contest was set to determine the very fate of these nations.

The Eurovision, and other similar events, function as a barometer that tests your tolerance for kitschy, classless entertainment. No, I’m not claiming that it’s not fun. But it’s just as misguided and lacking in grace as a mud fight.

I’m so glad music such as Mats Wikström’s “Lågan är evig, men kanske inte vår” is above the pressures to look and sound glitzy, on  queue or on key. It would ruin the fun of it. And, oh boy, this can be fun.

Unlike the aforementioned television shows, Mats Wikström’s music is designed to appeal to people whose musical tastes have evolved past entertainment cliches. It’s direct, energy-filled, both clever and naive garage-rock music. It’s pure.
