Maximiliano – Gone Too Long

Nobody believes the truth the first time that someone else tells them about it. Not the whole truth. Certainly not any important part of it. And, of course, everyone feels the need to test things out for themselves, to see where the lies begin and end.

That’s why it’s never easy to convince someone of what they’ll feel like if they make a certain decision. That’s why you always need to let people make their own choices and then make their own mistakes.

Running away to find yourself in the big, wide world sounds glamorous. But it might not be all that it’s cracked up to be. That’s the message that Maximiliano has, but he also has a strategy for how to make people into believers.

Truth delivered along with a nice tune has tremendous power. And “Gone Too Long” is one that may speak to just about anyone who has been inclined to run away from their problems only to find that solutions were available nearby, all along.

Stonefruit – Heaven or Nothing

No proper love song ought to have a happy ending. Not a real one, anyway. Those kinds of things make for great wedding songs, or for the kind of stuff old couples slow dance to on Friday evenings. But, typically, they’re made by hacks who have no qualms about adding jazz chords to human emotion and seeing if the result is a pile of cash.

Nah, what I expect from a great artist performing a great song on stage is a problem that has no possible solution. I’m looking for an endless stream of tears followed by the curtain coming down. Stonefruit seem to feel the same way. And while disastrous, unfulfilled love affairs are not something to wish upon anyone’s actual life, how else would great love songs be born?

Stonefruit sounds like a potentially great band who has not yet decided whether it wants to share its gifts with the world or not. On “Heaven or Nothing”, the singer sounds like someone who has nearly decided they want tragedy over happiness just because it’d make for better rhymes. It’s darkly romantic alternative rock for those of us who still hope that true love won’t find you in the end, at least not in the really good tunes.
