MC & Hawestyle – The Better Days

Things are great, technology is wonderful, and most of the musicians that you get to hear are top-notch. Damn, all this near-perfection can be terribly boring. We’ve achieved everything that the progressive rock crowds of the 1970s dreamed of, and now all is dull and predictable.

The fact is that most bands that will become successful know their lane. They know their genre, what famous bands they sound like and have the good business sense not to walk out of that path. It all makes you ache for something less predictable, less polished and, honestly, more creative.

There’s nothing you could describe as perfect or sophisticated about MC & Hawestyle’s “The Better Days.” They arguably haven’t decided what genre they’re supposed to fit and haven’t bothered copying a more famous act. They shouldn’t! “The Better Days” is charmingly lo-fi, creative in the way it blends country and 2000s rap, colourful, and bittersweet. It sounds like the music that your most creative friend might make when learning to make music. It’s a rare find.

We Found The Wreck – Phosphorescence

It’s not so much that life beats the dreams you had as a child out of you. For the most part, nothing the Universe does shows that deep of an interest in any of our actions.

What really happens, I suppose, is that the people around you do the job themselves. Some of them do it unwillingly, with their negative chants spilling onto you. Others are envious that you have any dreams to begin with. The results, usually, are the same.

It’s no wonder that great artists, as well as terrible dictators, do their best to surround themselves with people mad enough to believe that everything is possible.

We Found The Wreck has looked long and hard at those negative mantras. Like most of us, the songwriter has suffered days upon days of back-breaking work, terrible TV dinners, and noisy neighbours, followed by the same patterns the next day.

But “Phosphorescence” is that country-tinged alt-rocker that wants to remind you to keep dreaming. Do it often and go all out! Listen only to those dreams and to the people who want you to keep them alive. That’s the message and, certainly, what has propelled We Found The Wreck on this one. And if this isn’t proof of making dreams come true, what is?
