Go Machine – Blue Bear
Genre: Garage Rock, Alternative Rock
Similar artists: Dinosaur Jr, Foo Fighters, Green Day
Ask most of the old guard responsible for terrific music scenes and they’ll all tell you one thing. Get your own scene! We might think that we’re honouring them by wearing shirts of their groups and copying their style. But, we’re really just wasting the opportunity to create something great of our own.
By the time, for example, the world learned of J. Mascis’ guitar playing, Jimi Hendrix records were twenty years old. That’s a long time when it comes to art meant to reflect the sign of the times. Even longer time has passed since Dinosaur Jr put out their first records.
Go Machine are a new group. They take their queues from Dinosaur Jr and Husker Du. But, they’re looking to ride the guitar feedback wave on to new shores. Blued Bear finds them where a new band should be. They’re trading blows and seeing how loud their amp can go before it turns to smithereens. Go Machine are in the process of finding their voice, and it’s intriguing to be a part of those here to witness this.
MFMB – Six-Figure Income
Genre: Alternative Rock
Similar artists: Swans, The Doors
Rock music is juvenile. And, it ought to remain this way. At least as a fan of it through its long, and often boring history, think that it’s at its very best when it rejects maturity.
Almost nobody becomes a rock fan in their adult years. That is simply bizarre. Hooray for your if you manage to find that connection. But, really, we all know that the loud, anarchic, hopeful sounds of rock music are something that sticks to your teenage brain like gum to the soles of your shoe. If you’re lucky, you never scrape it off.
MFMB are stylish, modern musicians. But, on Six-Figure Income they also let themselves be primitive, cavemen types. The kind that The Stooges like. It takes great intelligence, and a complete lack of it, to create this kind of sound. At its best, it’s a song that hits you right between the ears like someone wielding a baseball bat. There’s no reason you should like MFMB, just like you shouldn’t like The Stooges. But, you’re a better person if you do.
