Liquid Pennies – Why’s Time

Genre: Punk, Surf Rock, Psychedelic Rock

Similar artists: Viagra Boys, Osees, Hella, The B 52s, Devo, Ty Segall, Sonic Youth, Idles, Fontaines D.C., The Cramps

Playing rock music remains an extremely attractive proposition. Perhaps not as a way to pay your rent. But, certainly, a way to engage in life in a direct, visceral way.

Look, most things take time. Time that nobody has, or will be able to demand back. Meanwhile, the world is turning to a blaze all around you. Being able to put a few years aside for a diploma, a promotion, or even to competently learn to play Steely Dan songs is not something you should guarantee to anybody.

Liquid Pennies’ Why’s Time sound like a group of people that have fallen in love with the idea of being in a rock band. It also feels like they’ve given the whole thing little consideration. They’re here, their guitars are twanging and the drummer can just about keep things straight. It’s time to bravely, foolishly push forward. Rock allows you to do these things, you know. How can you not love it?

Michael Michael Motorcycle – Darling

Genre: Indie Rock, Indie Pop, Dream Pop

I’ve always been fascinated by cults, the people who start them, and the people that are willing to join them. I’ve also been fascinated by the tradition of cults. Sure, these can spring up anywhere. But, a certain tradition of similar pseudo-spiritual activities creates just the ripe field for similar movements to spring up.

Of all the modern spiritual movements, the U.S. variety is the most famous. Because of the movies, of course. And, because they represent a sort of immediate, and powerful breakdown of American values. You’re telling me that people actually preferred dropping acid and living out on the streets to getting jobs in big fancy offices.

If it happened once, it can happen again. Mysterious, charming, and confused Michael Michael Motorcycle offer up Darling as proper cult music for the near future. The band’s fascination’s with gender politics and mobile phone use in the year 2036 might sound odd. But, the American bearded gurus of the past weren’t speaking more sense either. They just had the tunes, the charisma, and the chemical enhancements. This could be a wild, colorful ride.
