Mikael Willy Wilhelmsson – Fever From Broken Bones
If you’ve any ambition of becoming someone great, regardless of the field in which you wish to achieve mastery, you must find somebody who has already earned the things you have. You must make sure that you admire this person, that you like to study them as they go about their work. And, most importantly, you must be willing to rob them blind.
In fact, this is the difference between a future master and the myriad of people who merely copy and fake their way through whatever career they have chosen. Great art, for example, is just a composite of fantastic ideas that have been taken over time, reshaped, repurposed, made to look brand new. This is what Mikael Willy Wilhelmsson bravely does.
The moody, grunge, yet modern-sounding “Fever From Broken Bones” does. It’s a song that wears its inspiration on its sleeve. It pays debt to Chris Cornell and Soundgarden’s “Fell on Black Days.” But this is far from a cover. This is a demonstration of what diligent study can do. This is a song that digs deeply for soulfulness, finds it and rewards the faithful.
Parking Garage – Truly Automatic
You’ve never heard the greatest records ever made, or read the most important novels. There’s no way that you ever can. They’re all buried, at best, under people’s mattresses and under junk in some dirty garage.
Everyone cares about themselves and what meaning their life has in the world. Everyone wants to make a difference, create something meaningful that others can find hope in and which, possibly, will help turn around the lives of many.
Most people are too scared to start doing something, and almost everyone is too scared to finish it. If they ever do, the result feels optimised to perfection, which, in the end, is the ultimate fault. Parking Garage resists this, and the results are beautiful.
There’s something desperate about the way in which “Truly Automatic” aims to be fun and funky. No, I don’t mean it’s ridiculous. Quite the opposite. It reads like a script based on a true story, like something so important that it needed to be shouted out over loud horns. Perfection be damned!
