Sun-drenched psychedelia – new music reviews – August 2020

As We Leave - Stories We Tell modern shoegaze psychedelic review new music 2020

Kindsight – Who Are You

Kindsight makes beautiful retro pop music (with just a tinge of shoegaze). In fact, it’s all so sunny, that it sounds like an ode to a very small town, where people are perfectly content to live among one another as they stroll lazily down main street.

The fact that the sun-drenched vibes come via regularly chilly Denmark, isn’t as strange as you might initially think. Scandinavians have always had a great ear for melody, and the Danes are rumored to be disarmingly polite. Personally, I love the Cardigans’ debut album and was saddened they never made anything quite like it. This sounds like a worthy successor.

As We Leave – Stories We Tell

As We Leave want to sound impeccable, like they’re just arrived for an audition to join the roster on Apple Records, and they’re not ashamed to shoot for perfection. Stories we tell is the soundtrack to a summer spent out in the country from the perspective of someone that doesn’t get out of the city too often.

The theme is not as important as the music here. As We Leave makes beautiful space-pop like Pink Floyd via their hash-tea oddity Saint Tropez. And, like that ol’ chestnut, it will be worth revisiting every once in a while.
