MR. BiG WiRE – Spaceship

Rock n’ roll isn’t supposed to tell you the truth. It doesn’t owe you that much. It’s merely supposed to make you feel like possibilities are endless and that you’ll be able to boogie onto the next set of opportunities without having to fret over the details. And since this is all that it needs to do, we’d better stop asking our favourite rockstars to become spokespeople for this and that issue.

Nah, rockers just like the romantic poets know that their special power and their way of getting by in this world is by telling the people willing to listen what they want to hear. Rock is a beautiful, but deceitful game. Songs will tell you that love affairs go on forever, that heroes never lose, that truth wins out.

And, in this era of tech-induced anxiety, don’t we need some of those beautiful illusions more than ever? MR. BiG WiRE’s “Spaceship” is a minimalist alt-rock love song about finding a way to travel through space and time as a duo brought together by the unbreakable power of romance. Sweet emotion aside, there’s something about MR. BiG WiRE’s loose, aggressive, grandiose garage-rock playing that should make you want to follow this bad into some smoky club, or up on a spaceship for eternity.

Stereotyping, sadly, for the most part works. You look at people and without thinking twice you make a judgement about them. And, as it turns out, nine times out of ten, you’re on the money. That very same logic works when you’re judging pop-rock bands, with the sole exception that you’re likely to get it right ninety-five times out of a hundred.

And, because musicians and producers know that this is the way that the game gets played, they prepare. Bands dress in ways that will automatically make you associate them with a certain genre. Songs are designed in a manner in which, after 20 seconds, you’ll precisely know what’s going to happen. But are you still prepared for some big surprises?

greedyfeedr is a brave band. The Canadian prog-rockers take a page right out of The Volta Volta’s earliest records, and opt to test the commitment of their listeners. “Press Your Skin Grafts Against Me” is esoteric, complex psychedelic music played with the intensity of people bringing the whole of their accumulated frustration to this performance. It’ll take you by surprise, but it’s designed this way.
