Mutual Ascent – Acceptance
Rock music is a really strange vehicle for truth-telling. For the most part, and quite frankly, it rarely works when used in this way. You see, since its beginning, this music has been a method to tell beautiful, fat lies and to get people to cheer on when you make up stories over a danceable beat.
But, once in a while, somebody takes a chance, opens their heart, and lets everything spill out. Usually, and on the rare occasion when this happens, however, they’re bitter, angry and determined to settle a debt. Rock stars only tell the truth when the story places them in a good light, and everyone else is shown as the villain.
Thankfully, the music of Mutual Ascent is driven not just by a desire to reveal how things were, but by a good sense of humour about the way things go sometimes. “Acceptance” is an absolutely charming breakup song that’s heavy on the lo-fi power-pop melodies (quite a treat!) and the highly revealing lyrics about the last days of a romance doomed to fail. It works so well that it nearly makes one want to admit one’s own shortcomings.
I don’t speak french – Sorry Not Sorry
For the most part, people have the same kinds of ideas at the same times. It’s why it’s always hard to find a good parking space in the centre of town on Friday afternoons. And it’s the reason why folks tend to gravitate toward the same kind of thrills and things meant to give them pleasure, or to give their lives meaning.
And, while none of us may be quite as original as we would hope to be, what is for certain is that nearly all of us get turned on by the same excitement and by similar fantasies. Who among us hasn’t wanted to crash a party, laugh in the face of graceless hosts and have a pumping soundtrack ring out as we walk out on people that we can’t stand.
I don’t speak french’s “Sorry Not Sorry” echoes the fantasy of people who would like to live by their own rules. This makes their potential audience colossal, as does the fact that, as I’m sure you’ll recognise without being told, this is a sample of the hard-to-resist modern pop music. It’s sweet, kind of outlandish and very much sounds like a hit.
