Octopus Knife Fight – Eyes Up Feat. Lia Menaker
All of the sitcoms that had run a little too long would eventually focus, at least, one of their episodes on the premise of the main character visiting a hypnotism show and, despite their protests, getting turned into a clucking chicken.
It was a ridiculous premise, but one that worked well enough that comedy show writers have used it for decades without end. Audiences, of course, must have shown their approval in one way or another, meaning you’re likely to see more of it in the future.
Its success, I assume, is due to the fact that no self-respecting human being believes that it could be them getting hypnotised. Yet, this is precisely what has happened to the majority of the world’s population in recent years, as Octopus Knife Fight would like to remind us.
Octopus Knife Fight’s “Eyes Up,” a song featuring Lia Menaker, is a tender indie-pop song meant to get you through one of the most common and dangerous addictions, that of your internet-connected phone. “Anything is better than nothing here”, the vocalist tells us, and you can’t help but weep for what we’ve become as a species.
Lava Bow – GRIEF SONG
Beware the musician with dak, mysterious soul and a chord book hidden underneath their arm! They’re capable of amazing, nearly magical things, but not on command. These gifts don’t always arrive when they desire them to.
Nah, instead, all those pretty chords start blending together and making sense only when the world seems to be in a true and terrible mess. It’s only then, when things are at their worst, that music is at its best.
That’s why these musicians are the guarantee that the world will never truly become a hellhole, that some sort of hope will be transferred to the world. This is what Lava Bow try to do on their most recent single.
In fact, a lot of the chords and melodies of “GRIEF SONG” feel directly inspired by the most hopeful era in pop music – the shining 60s. And, while this is, technically, a song about how difficult life is to understand, it also acts as a reminder of just how beautiful life can be, even at its most confusing and anxiety-inducing. A few chords may yet change the world, but they can certainly put it back in balance.
