Bust-ups: Odd Army and The Brontosaur reviewed

Odd Army and The Brontosaur reviewed

The Brontosaur – The Fisherman

Genre: Indie Rock, Alternative Rock

The music business ain’t much of a business anymore. This is, at least, the conclusion to which many economic analysts have reached. The same well-informed people will advise anyone expressing an interest in entering this trade, be it as an artist, record owner, producer, etc, to stay away and try their hand at more conservative forms of employment.

If that were true, however, your social media wouldn’t be filled with news of 60-year-olds getting the band back together and out on the road. Also, you wouldn’t be forced to lie to yourself that the new music these groups put out, usually a rehash of days long-passed, is worthy of getting excited.

The fact is that creating art that explores new ideas and sailing dangerously towards unknown harbors worries most musicians. It does not bother The Brontosaur on the single The Fisherman. Just like a dangerous expedition in treacherous waters, the music here comes with a sense of sailing into the unknown. It’s enough to make the musicians panic and their audience worry that they won’t be able to handle such demands. But hang in there, and you will be rewarded. Certainly, it will be worth your time more than what the 60-year-old rockstars try to push on you.

Odd Army – Mother Burns

Genre: Psychedelic Rock, Alternative Rock

Pressed about his favorite rock bands, in an interview conducted in the early 2000s, Thom Yorke remarked that rock music was stupid. So, there, go sell off your guitar on eBay right now to avoid being an idiot! Or, instead, come to terms with rock music’s silliness, and you might do yourself and the whole world a favor.

Sure, rock music is frivolous, naive, and immature. But, don’t things don’t make it bad. Are make-believe stories created by children bad? They won’t form the basis for any Hollywood blockbuster. Isn’t it entertaining to watch a child throwing a tantrum when they don’t get what they want? Sure, if you’re not their parent.

The fact is that in order to make good rock music, you have to have refused to truly grow up. Odd Army’s Mother Burns functions like a teenager’s outburst. It’s uncontrolled, unpredictable, and hard to know where it will stop. This makes it very interesting to witness. It’s unlikely to provide quite the chin-rubbing moments of hearing Radiohead, but then again, we all need to learn to live a little, eh?
