Old Sparky and DEAD STAR TALK Reviewed
Old Sparky – The Scumbags Way
It’s always taken guts to do anything different from the manner employed by the vast majority of people. You get funny looks, at best. At worst, you get someone knocking on your door, and once opened, various pieces of rotten fruit thrown at your head.
With this in mind, it’s still a marvellous time for punk-rock, and most of us don’t even know it. No, no, it’s not like some power chord never before used in song has been found.
The fact is that it’s harder than ever to have a different opinion from everyone else. It’s difficult not to fall in line. And, even when doing that, it’s awfully challenging not to turn into a complete manic by trying to compensate.
Old Sparky believes in punk-rock, doesn’t trust authority and, most importantly, is unwilling to change. So, whatcha gonna do about it? Pick a fight? Sparky’d love it. “The Scumbags Way” is a classic punk-rock tune about not meeting others’ expectations and being proud of it.
DEAD STAR TALK – Don’t Stop Tonight
Your greatest nights on this planet had you convinced, for a while, at least, that they would never end. Or, at least, the things you were feeling, likely for the first time, made you think that this was the way that every night was going to go.
And what pushed you into thinking that? There were, most likely, all sorts of stimulants involved and friends of ill-repute. But, make no mistake about it, the music never sounded as good as it did back then.
Those were the highs, but where are the inevitable lows? They’re there once the lights finally come on, but on “Don’t Stop Tonight,” Dead Star Talk are doing their damn hardest to keep the bad thoughts at bay and the bad decisions flowing.
And, yes, it’s a whole lot of fun, with the German band echoing the modern retro garage-rock-loving The Hellacopters. This is great, fun party music. But it feels like the tune that would be playing before a movie scene that comes just before the inevitable collapse.
